The slowest kid on the block

It’s not me anymore! Yes I am as surprised as you. This might be the post run dopamine talking, but I feel like I get faster by the minute (Microsoft minutes … not linux minutes though).

During today’s run I again got 3 new “MAF” PRs. This time I ran 1 km in under 8 minutes, my fastest 5k (42 minutes) and a mile in 12 minutes something.

What I found pleasing though is to realize my transformation from 1 year ago … usually I don’t run in the park and not that late, so I met a lot of unknown runners. There was someone just barely faster than me who had to walk after he had overtaken me. There were others that had to include walking breaks as well. I just ran around like clock work, switched off brain and processing the day ahead (programming in the head while running is highly recommended).

Last year this was me. Running a bit then walking and watching others tick by … hoping that some day this would be me. Now it is me …

  1. Isn’t that a great feeling? I remember the first time I “taught” myself how to run, and I would run for 1 minute and walk for 5 (doing intervals of that)… I’d see the other runners zipping past me, thinking to myself, “There’s no way that will ever be me.” But then the day came where it WAS me! Right now I’m kind of at square one and when I see my pace, I get upset because I remember what it was like being faster… but, like you, I’ll get faster over time and impress myself someday!

      1. I actually just did some sprint intervals yesterday… it wasn’t pretty! But you have to start somewhere, right?

      2. For the rest of this month, my plan is to just run based on how I feel. My goal is to build up to being able to run 3 miles at a 10 minute pace. Then, starting the first week of July, I will be following an actual training program which will have planned-out interval training thrown in there. So, right now I’m just kind of running around my block – sprint one side, jog the next side, sprint one side… over and over for 3 laps. ๐Ÿ™‚
